I’m Balaji Bankapur, a Senior Principal Software Engineer and Software Architect with more than 20 years of experience building software products and complex engineering systems — spanning operating systems, enterprise software, healthcare technology, and medical devices. My work has increasingly focused on software architecture and system design, where reliability, safety, and long-lived engineering discipline really matter.
Today, I’m exploring how Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the way we design and build software — from the perspective of an engineer and architect, not a spectator.
Background
My career started with traditional software engineering, and over time moved from writing software to thinking about how entire systems should be designed: how components interact, how information flows, how failures are handled, and how architectural decisions age over years of production use. Working on medical-device and healthcare software reinforced a belief I carry into everything I build:
Good technology is not just about making something work. It’s about making it reliable, understandable, maintainable, and fit for its purpose.
That architectural mindset now shapes how I look at AI.
Where I’m Focused
Large Language Models are no longer just tools for generating text — they’re becoming components inside software systems that reason, retrieve knowledge, use tools, and coordinate with other agents. That raises real architectural questions: how to design AI systems that are reliable, evaluable, and worth trusting in production. Those are the questions I’m working through here.
My current focus areas:
- Generative AI — LLMs, RAG, vector databases, prompt engineering, evaluation, and AI application architecture.
- Agentic AI — planning, tool use, multi-agent systems, orchestration, and autonomous workflows.
- AI + Software Architecture — patterns for integrating LLMs, agents, knowledge stores, memory, and evaluators into real systems.
- Knowledge & Reasoning — knowledge graphs, semantic relationships, AI memory, and how machines represent and retrieve what they know.
How I Write
I believe the best way to understand technology is to build with it. Reading about an AI architecture and actually implementing one are two very different things — the second is where the honest questions live: what happens when the model is wrong, when an agent gets stuck, when cost or latency blow up, when evaluation is harder than the feature itself.
This site is where I document those experiments, decisions, successes, and failures. You’ll find articles on practical AI, agentic systems, software architecture, and hands-on prototypes — including the ones that didn’t work, because a failed experiment often teaches more than a polished demo. I try to write for engineers and architects who want more signal than hype.
Beyond the Code
Outside of technology, I’m interested in how people think, learn, remember, and make decisions — psychology, cognitive science, and human learning. As AI systems become more capable, the relationship between human and machine intelligence feels increasingly worth understanding.
